War memorial hopes dashed

A severe set-back has been delivered to hopes that Caistor War Memorial could be refurbished.

Caistor Town Council’s bid for funding from the War Memorials Trust for the letters to be recut has been turned down, clerk Helen Pitman said on Thursday (February 12, 2015).

The Trust indicated that a grant bid of £270 to add some names might be successful, if evidence was provided that it had been properly researched, she added.

Caistor had sought £2700 towards recutting the letters because of concerns they could not be seen clearly, especially on one face where there is a prevailing wind.

The War Memorials Trust suggested recutting the inscriptions should be considered a last resort as it can only be done a finite number of times, said Ms Pitman. The Trust considered that the inscriptions still appeared legible.

Ms Pitman said it would take a fair amount of time to fill in the grant form for the £270.

The discussion prompted councillors to query the nature of roadworks currently taking place near the war memorial and outside the Multi-Use Centre.

It is believed the work is to enhance broadband facilities and there may also be a hub for electric vehicles.

However, there was concern as to whether a communications cabinet might be installed alongside the Multi-Use Centre as a result.

“If they are going to put a green box outside the Multi-Use Centre, we should be notified,” said Mayor Steve Millson.

Cllr John Burns-Salmond also wanted to ensure stonework was replaced properly after the works were completed to prevent weeds growing there.
