Poem that impressed In Bloom judges is shared

Mayor of Caistor Carol McKensie reads a poem by local poet David Rivett

Caistor In Bloom has praised a local poet for his skill in composing a tribute to the town – and also to the town’s Mayor for the way she read it out.

David Rivett composed the poem, The Long Cool Drink, which was read out at a reception for the judges and In Bloom team on Wednesday (July 15, 2015).

It was read out by town Mayor Carol Mackenzie at the reception at The White Hart.

The Citizen praised Mayor Mackenzie’s skill at reading the poem, singling out the Mayor’s clear diction and the pace of her delivery.

“It was spot on,” said leading In Bloom member Michael Galligan. “We’re lucky to have these talents in Caistor.”

Both the poet and the Mayor were prompt in agreeing to their involvement, which was also very much appreciated, he added.

The Long Cool Drink

Now Summer holds this Caistor in its cup
A pleasing vintage for another year
That’s shared around for all of us to sup
For all of us to drink its warmth and cheer
Unsullied with ambition’s bitter edge
It has a tangy zest to lift its taste
And make us all seek to renew our pledge
To share our joy so none shall go to waste.
A floral garland wound about the town
Will make a garnish on this vessel’s lip
That sits upon it like a sparkling crown
And lures us all to take a heady sip.
So let us all drink in the hours we share
And hold this town within our loving care.

David Rivett
