Spar prepares for tobacco changes

The Spar in Caistor is getting ready to have all its tobacco products concealed from view.

New regulation will come into force in April but the Spar’s retailer – who is usually known by his nickname “PK” – says he hopes to “go blind” before then. He is currently taking steps to train staff to make sure they will be fully compliant with the law.

The system is already in place at the town’s Co-op.

PK said he did not expect the move to affect the level of tobacco sales at the Spar. “People know what they like. They’ll just carry on asking for it.”

He had read research that suggested “going blind” did not even deter young people from taking up smoking, he said.

The biggest threat to retailers’ tobacco sales was the black market, he added.
