Streets packed for ‘Sting’ 10k run

Caistor’s streets were filled with a party atmosphere yesterday as hundreds of runners turned out for the East Trans 10K “Sting in the Tail.”

The start of the route near Redhills Close and the course finish at the Market Square was packed with spectators, marshals, first aid personnel and other race officials, with many more people lining the route to cheer on the 305 runners.

And local runner Nick Martin, of Caistor Running Club, stunned everyone by completing the course in just 33 minutes and 40 seconds. It was the third year running that he has won “The Sting.”

Joe Wilkinson, of Lincoln, came second with a time of 34:13, and Timmy Davies, of Leeds, came third on 34:32.

Among the women, Beverley Wilson of Cleethorpes came first, again for the third year in a row, with a time of 40:47. Second was Sophie Jones on 42:11 and third was Sarah Davies, of Elswick Harriers, with a time of 45:04.

Caistor runner Mike Wells won best male fancy dress, and was also leader of the male 40-44 year old age category. It was a hat-trick for Mike, being one of three who completed the best running times for his team, the Caistor Running Club.

The contestant who won the most cheers was probably primary school teacher Nick McCann, who confessed later that he had only started training a week before.

“It was worth it, though in a strange kind of way,” he said. “I saw so many friends, and people standing at the end of their driveways cheering us. I know where everyone lives now.”

Commentator at the event was John Burns-Salmond.
